Embracing Christmas Traditions: A Journey to Prince of Wales Island

Blog ALISHA XMAS FAMILY TRADTION IN THE TORRES STRAIT ISLANDS (1)

As the festive season approaches, it’s a time when families come together to celebrate cherished traditions. For our team member, Alisha, the Christmas spirit takes on a unique and meaningful form on Prince of Wales Island in the Torres Strait.

Years ago, Alisha’s family sought permission from the traditional owners of this beautiful island village to camp along the pristine beaches. Since then, Alisha and her extended family have made it a tradition to spend a couple of weeks immersed in the natural wonders of Prince of Wales, particularly on the sandy shores of Box Beach.

From fishing in the crystal-clear waters to hunting for traditional foods, boating adventures, and evenings gathered around the campfire, this annual pilgrimage captures the essence of Christmas in a truly Australian way.

As we reflect on Alisha’s heartwarming tradition, we invite you to share your own family’s unique Christmas rituals. What makes this season special for you? Let’s celebrate the diverse tapestry of traditions that bring joy and warmth to our lives during this magical time of the year.
