In this blog, we explore the four essential steps of an <strong>R U OK?<\/strong> conversation, demonstrating how these conversations can foster a workplace culture of care, empathy, and solidarity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Ask R U Ok?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be relaxed, friendly and concerned in your approach.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help them open up by asking questions like &#8220;How are you going?&#8221; or &#8220;What\u2019s been happening?&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mention specific things that have made you concerned for them, like &#8220;You seem less chatty than usual. How are you going?&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>IF<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If they don\u2019t want to talk, don\u2019t criticise them.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tell them you\u2019re still concerned about changes in their behaviour and you care about them.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid a confrontation. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">You could say: \u201cPlease call me if you ever want to chat\u201d or \u201cIs there someone else you\u2019d rather talk to?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2. Listen With An Open Mind<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take what they say seriously and don&#8217;t interrupt or rush the conversation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t judge their experiences or reactions but acknowledge that things seem tough for them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If they need time to think, sit patiently with the silence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encourage them to explain: &#8220;How are you feeling about that?&#8221; or &#8220;How long have you felt that way?&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Show that you&#8217;ve listened by repeating back what you\u2019ve heard (in your own words) and ask if you have understood them properly. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ENCOURAGE ACTION<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Encourage Action<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask: \u201cWhat have you done in the past to manage similar situations?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask: \u201cHow would you like me to support you?&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask: \u201cWhat\u2019s something you can do for yourself right now? Something that\u2019s enjoyable or relaxing?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could say: &#8220;When I was going through a difficult time, I tried this&#8230; You might find it useful too.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If they&#8217;ve been feeling really down for more than 2 weeks, encourage them to see a health professional. You could say, &#8220;It might be useful to link in with someone who can support you. If they&#8217;re really struggling, follow up with them sooner.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could say: &#8220;I&#8217;ve been thinking of you and wanted to know how you&#8217;ve been going since we last chatted.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask if they&#8217;ve found a better way to manage the situation. If they haven&#8217;t done anything, don&#8217;t judge them.
