\n\t\tNAIDOC Week<\/span> is an annual event<\/span>\u202fcelebrat<\/span>ing<\/span> <\/span><\/span>the<\/span> <\/span><\/span>culture<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span><\/span>history<\/span> <\/span><\/span>and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples<\/span>.<\/span> The acronym, which has since become the name of the week itself, stands for <\/span>National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee<\/span> and can be traced back to Aboriginal groups in the 1920s that sought to increase awareness and improve the treatment of <\/span>Indigenous<\/span> <\/span><\/span>Australians<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n \n\t\t <\/p>\n<\/div>\n \n\t\tThough usually held in<\/span> the first week of<\/span> July<\/span> each year<\/span>, due to COVID-19, NAIDOC Week<\/span> 2020<\/span> has been postponed to <\/span>8-15 November<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n \n\t\t <\/p>\n<\/div>\n \n\t\tRead on to learn more about the event and some of the ways you can celebrate <\/span>i<\/span>n<\/span> your community.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n \n\t\t <\/p>\n<\/div>\n \n\t\tThis Year\u2019s Theme<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \n\t\tThe 2020 NAIDOC Week theme is <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Always <\/span>W<\/span>as, Always Will Be,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/span>and invites us to embrace the true history of Australia, one that dates back thousands of generations. The theme is <\/span>in reference to<\/span> a chant recited at many protests and gatherings, where the final line is \u201cAboriginal land.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \n\t\tFirst Nations People have occupied and cared for our country for more than 65,000 years and were Australia\u2019s first explorers, engineers, farmers, diplomats, scientists, astronomers, <\/span>storytellers<\/span> and artists. \u201c<\/span>Always Was, Always Will Be<\/span>\u201d<\/span> recognises th<\/span>e eminent role that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people played in shaping this great continent to sustainably provide for the future.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n \n\t\t <\/p>\n<\/div>\n \n\t\tHow to Get Involved<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \n\t\t\tDuring NAIDOC Week, people across the country are encouraged to participate in local community celebrations organised by government agencies, local councils, <\/span>businesses<\/span> and schools.
